The Art of Gratitude

Gratitude Book

Heal Your Life 468x60

“Life is Difficult.” is the first sentence in Dr M. Scott Peck’s famous novel, The Road Less Travelled. The Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition : A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual GrowthSelf-Help Books)

At the moment my life is difficult but I have accepted it and true to Dr Peck’s wisdom it seems less difficult to manage. One strategy that is helping me get through this next chapter of my life is recording 3 items I am thankful for every day. I picked up a beautiful book from Kikki.K self titled, Gratitude and before I go to bed, I select a coloured felt pen and pause for a moment to record 3 Things that I am Grateful for Today. It is not always easy when they days feel like mud but surprisingly even if it it is something simple like:

  • I have a place to live
  • I have a job I enjoy
  • Peace and quiet
  • My health
  • Two walking Toddlers
  • Chocolate cake
  • Walk on the Beach

I start to feel better and I start to believe again that life is beautiful and everything is going to be ok.

    Hello Lisa,

I’ve been poking around the net, checking out blogs on bipolar. Thanks for raising awareness and sharing.

This post got my attention because of, “The Road Less Traveled”…which I read years ago. I like the focus on gratitude.

A few years back, I went through a most devastating experience. Honestly, it has taken a long time to overcome. And I’m somewhere between 80% to 90% there.

Through the darkest days of the early onslaught…I found it a challenge to be thankful for anything…much less take the time to write it down.

I’m fifty…and probably have bipolar, though I’ve never been diagnosed. The descriptions I read certainly describe many of my own life experiences.

So I keep putting one foot in front of another. I’m more hopeful and more thankful these days. Which is one reason I created my own quasi blog. It is my own way of giving something of worth to others. That which comes from the heart has to be better.
