I admit I am a fraudulent working at home mother or WAHM. Working at home mothers seek freedom, flexibility and a work life balance to have it all by earning an income while working around your children routine and schooling. As much as I would love to be a full time WAHM; I am not. At the moment I am a full time working mother with a 9-5 job, toddler twins in childcare 3 days a week and my pursuit to be a WAHM is part-time late nights while the kids are asleep building my various online businesses. I would love to be in a position to start cutting down my full time career to spend more time, enjoying my time to pursue my creative ideas while enjoying and exceeding the income I currently demand.
The problem is realistically it is IMPOSSIBLE TO combine Toddlers with Business. Even if you are lucky for your employer to allow you to work from home a day a week, if you have a toddler (or 2 or more) underfoot forget it. It is extremely challenging. You will find either you child is spending way too much time in front of the TV or your work gets neglected. So I am coming to conclusion maybe it is not the work from home ethos people want but really employers whom are are FLEXIBLE. I want the flexibility yes to occasionally work from home but also the flexibility to work around school hours.
The other week I was recommended to a very good kindergarten where you can’t put your child on the waiting list over the phone, so it meant taking time off work, to drag the twins to the prospective kindergarten one afternoon to pay a deposit for enrollment in 2014. Only to be told their opening hours are 9am to 2:45pm and they are not open school holidays. In a little disbelief I decided not pay the deposit. I am not a stay at home mum. How can I find the hours to get to and from work to collect them from school!? It would mean I would work 10:00-2:00pm – 4 hours a day! Sure maybe I could find someone to do a drop off or pick up. Now I am stressing about when they go to school? I don’t want my girls in after school care five days a week?
But if in two years time my WAHM businesses earned enough to work only 4 hours in a day than that woul
d be the dream. That would be SUCCESS. That would be wonderful. Best of both worlds.
I have just moved into my new house and setting up my office has been a joy. The first step to a WAHM is setting up your workspace. Perhaps a wine is not always mandatory but if you are blogging at night than why not! Settling down with a glass of red, large window to the backyard, and surrounding my space with books and pictures I love. Bliss. An office like this to inspire me to motivate and keep working so that by 2014 I can collect my kids from school on time!

What a gorgeous view and I <3 the yellow!
Wow, you are busy! Congrats on getting your businesses going while working full time AND caring for toddlers! I think if your goal is to work from home, you will get there, eventually. Seems like finding the right school for your kids will be helpful.
Working from home would be ideal!! This is something I have dreamed of for a very long time.
Working from home is tough! Good luck on your venture. From someone that has been working from home for a long time, it never really gets any easier….you just improve your skill set at multitasking or “letting things go” LOL… Being home listening to the sounds of my family is priceless!
